Tips for Keeping Your Sanity When It’s Hot, Humid, and Buggy in Florida

Florida is magic.
It’s Disney and gators, beach towns and Key lime pie. It’s sunsets that stop you in your tracks, and that thick, sticky air that clings to you like a clingy ex haha.

If you’re not used to Florida summers, you really might feel like melting. Not in the cute “I’m melting for this sunset” way. No, I mean physically melting like a popsicle on a dashboard.
And don’t even get me started on the mosquitos… They LOVE me. The second I got off the plane, they’re like HHEEYYYY. And I don’t want a little humidity (okay, a lot) or a bug swarm to stop you from enjoying it! You can enjoy this sunny, steamy state… you just need a few tricks up your sweaty sleeve.

🧴 1. Sunscreen and bug spray are your best friends.

Seriously. Do not skip this.
You think, “Oh I’m just walking to brunch,” and next thing you know, you’re burnt and bitten. I keep Murphy’s Naturals Lemon Eucalyptus spray on me at all times, it smells great and works! Also: buggy bands. They can look a little silly, but they really really work!

🌬️ 2. Pack cooling gadgets like you’re entering a Survivor challenge.

I never understood the obsession with portable fans until Florida. I became a full blown clip on fan girl. There’s great options for every Florida scenario. You’ve got one for your beach chair, one for you neck, and a tiny pocket fan for emergencies.
Want to feel like royalty? Toss some damp towels in the cooler before you head out. When the heat starts creeping in, whip one out and drape it over your shoulders like a dramatic Southern belle. Instant relief.

💧 3. Hydration is not a suggestion, it’s survival.

No, iced coffee does not count, haha.
Bring a refillable water bottle everywhere. And for real, get yourself some Liquid I.V. packets or Pedialyte. It’s not just for kids or hangovers. It helps keep your energy up when the sun is trying to flatten you like a pancake.

🌦️ 4. Be ready for the weather to change her mind.

Florida is moody. You’ll be sunbathing at noon and running for cover from a thunderstorm by 1:17 p.m.
Don’t let it ruin your day, just pivot!
Some of our best travel memories came from last-minute detours into quirky local shops, museums we hadn’t planned on, or cafés where we waited out the rain and ended up chatting with strangers who became friends.

Bottom line

You can still have an amazing Florida trip, even if the air feels like soup and the bugs think you’re delicious.

Prep a little, pack smart, and give yourself some grace. You don’t have to do everything. You just have to stay cool, stay safe, and stay curious.
